Long time, no sketch-a-week!

This sketch is inspired by one of my favorite thrift store paintings, "Sad Dog With Hat Crying Into Beer Mug" by Donna Davis. You can view her painting here: http://www.thriftstoreart.com/pdogh.htm . I've always wanted a cat version, so here's my attempt.

This started with a line art drawing crudely assembled in MS Paint, and was one of the first drawings I tried to color in the Sketch Club app on my iPad, but took me a long time due to my unfamiliarity with the tools. Many minutes were wasted painting colors on the wrong layers, and learning the different brushes and paint modes. I wanted to give a more painterly look to the cat, but something about his flat, yellow coat fits the mood, or something. I wish the glass looked more glassy, and the tears more liquid-y, but each attempt will help me learn.

Back for some sin-age (sinnage?).

I sort of rushed this one (would have liked to put more detail into the background), but I had fun with the guy's expression. Maybe we should illustrate all of the sins! :)

The Sign of Four

So I'm doing a little experimentation.
I'm not sure how I feel about it. But it was fun.

The Swamp of Sadness, which also describes my artistic abilities.

Suffice it to say I tried about as hard on this drawing as Atreyu tried to save Artax, his horse, from drowning in the "Swamp of Sadness" in The Neverending Story. It is my most memorable movie moment to date, however. Crayons? What was I thinking?

I give up...

So I was trying to re-create one of my favorite creatures from the "Beastly Rhymes" book I had when I was a kid... It was this purple guy with a napkin around his neck and his name was "the Ugly Stubble." My first problem was not being able to find the book to really remember what the guy looked like. Then my memory sketch was way off, and I made things worse by coloring him green. Then I couldn't remember what he was supposed to be eating... Combine all of this with the fact that I was trying to learn this new piece of art software and it all comes down to me not being very happy with this guy. He looks like an angry Yoda on a hunger strike. And the Halloween atmosphere I was hoping to achieve does not come through at all. Oh well... At least I sort of got the hang of some of the layer tools on the software (ArtRage). Next.

A Bat.

I drew his wings folded up because I think he's cuter that way.

Personal Injury Attorney Carp...

Here is my fish. He is a Personal Injury Attorney Carp (or is this more like a halibut?). I know he has the colors of a clown fish, but clowns and personal injury attorneys are closely linked in my brain. I guess you could also just call him a douche bag fish if you want...
